My Jazz Harmonica dream came true! – visit www.jazzharmonica.org

My jazz harmonica initiative got reality today! The site www.jazzharmonica.org is live now. When I started studying jazz on the harmonica 22 years ago, I was all on my own. I had lessons with some classical and popular chromatic harmonica players but their ideas about style and technique didn’t fit the jazz sound I had in my mind. Every year, the Dutch organisation for accordeon and harmonica organized a nice festival but the audiences there were mainly interested in classical approaches and typical popular styles that the Hotcha Trio...

Hidden Landscapes; Wim as a composer

In 2009 I started composing for classical musicians combined with a jazz ensemble and samples of real life sounds. On top of that I improvise on the harmonica. The compositions are insprired by my life here in Brasil. The result is what could be called “chamber jazz” and the album that will be released in 2011 is called “Hidden...

Fulvia Di Domenico (IT)

I’am proud to be sideman and one of the main soloists in this remarkable band around singer Fulvia di Domenico.   Fulvia was born in Rome, Italy, and grew up travelling between Africa, France, Spain and Italy itself. She studied languages and literature at the University in Rome but secretly kept cultivating her passion for singing, which grew since childhood. In 2002 she came to the Netherlands to study Jazz and World music at the Rotterdam’s Conservatory, from where she graduated in 2006. The band “Fulvia” is an...

Dumee & Dijkgraaf Quinteto (BR)

THE SENSATION OF IMPRESSIONISTIC BRAZILIAN JAZZ   The diversity of musical personalities and the continues journey through musical landscapes is what makes the Dumee & Dijkgraaf Quinteto a sensation for audiences around the world. This quintet is composed of the elements from an uncommon triangle; Europe, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. With an Europian taste for classical refinement, balance and the beauty of structure, Minas adds the impressionistic ingredients of dreaming, of delicacy and spiritual panoramas while Rio finally...

Music Industry News Network

June 30, 2011 (New York, NY) Written by Music Industry News Network New Album From Dumee & Dijkgraaf Quinteto Is Wildly Innovative Brazilian Jazz The harmonica isn’t often associated in the world of jazz; it usage is more likely linked to folk and blues. But in the stylistically open-minded world of the Dumee & Dijkgraaf Quinteto, anything is fair game. On their latest album, “Heloisando,” the Dumee & Dijkgraaf Quinteto spice up Brazilian jazz with classical music, producing an intoxicating, infectious hybrid that is both...

JazzTimes.com by Leslie Connors

June 6, 2011 (New York, NY) Written by Leslie Connors for JazzTimes. Sometimes the stars are in perfect alignment; beneath the blanket of light and shadow magic is born. The wizardly offspring in this case is Dumee & Dijkgraaf Quinteto’s new album, “Heloisando,” which seems to exist in a world of its own. “Heloisando” rejuvenates Brazilian jazz with the pristine, haunting strands of classical music. On “Cipriano,” Jan Dumee’s guitars weave webs of hypnotic, translucent beauty. But the group is capable of more than just...

Fulvia – La Ballata Dei Piedi Volanti

From the liner notes: “Music is feeling, but you can’t always explain feelings … fortunately! The first time I heard Fulvia’s voice she was singing an old beautiful samba in a quite traditional setting. her extraordinary, clear, tender and beautiful sound made me feel as if with an embrace I was thrown back into ancient Brazil, where so many different cultures passed by to enrich and embellish our music even more. Fulvia sang that samba as if nobody had ever sang it before, as if it was made just for her. Through her...

Ariel Publicity by Bryan Rodgers

May 12, 2011 (New York, NY) Written by Bryan Rodgers - courtesy of ARIEL PUBLICITY Rating: 4 stars (out of 5) The proud tradition of innovative Brazilian jazz is alive and well as evidenced by Heloisando, the debut album from Dumee & Dijkgraaf Quinteto. This isn’t the hip-shaking, overtly sexualized dance music of Brazil, but rather a thoughtful, inclusive jazz style that nods to several different forms within a colorful equatorial framework. Headed up by Dutch musicians Jan Dumee (guitar/vocals) and Wim Dijkgraaf (harmonica), the...
